The Office of Premier in Eastern Cape, in partnership with the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sectorr Education and Training Authority (merSETA), is calling all unemployed youth across the Eastern Cape province to apply to be trained as qualified artisans.



About MerSETA:

The Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MERSETA) is one of 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) established in South Africa to promote skills development in terms of the Skills Development Act of 1998. MERSETA's main role is to identify scarce skills in the sector, develop and accredit training programs to meet the needs of the industry, provide funding for skills development initiatives, monitor the quality of training and advocate for the importance of skills development to government, businesses and individuals.



MerSETA has a large number of various apprenticeship programmes to accommodate every young person in the Eastern Cape Province. MERSETA apprenticeship programmes are structured workplace learning programmes that combine theoretical knowledge with practical on-the-job training. They allow individuals to gain the skills and qualifications needed to become qualified artisans in a trade recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The apprenticeship programmes will run for a period of 3 years.


The following apprenticeship programmes are currently available for 2024:

  • Auto - Electrician
  • Auto - Diesel
  • Motor Mechanic
  • Panel Beating
  • Millwrights
  • Tractor Mechanic
  • Fitting and Machining
  • Earth Moving Equipment
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Autobody Repairs
  • Refrigeration Maintenance
  • Air-conditioning Maintenance
  • Welders
  • Plumbing.
  • Electrical



To qualify for the MERSETA Apprenticeship Programmes, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a South African Citizen
  • You must be residing in the Eastern Cape province
  • You must be 18 - 35 years
  • You must have Technical Matric OR N2 with relevant trade theory OR NCV L4
  • For electrical apprenticeship, you must have Technical matric OR N3 with a relevant trade theory OR NCV L4
  • Subjects: English, Maths, Science, trade theory, with a minimum of 50% for Maths
  • You must be willing to commit to the programme for a period of 3 years.
  • You must be hard working and have a desire for the trade.

Note: If the application does not meet the above requirements, it will automatically be disqualified.

  • Full CV
  • Your certified ID copy
  • Your academic record
  • Your certified copies of all relevant qualifications

Due to the large number of anticipated applications received, applications will not be acknowledged in writing.
